Many parents would like their children to spend time in the UK but, for varying reasons, might not want them to become a full-time pupil at a British boarding school. Summer Schools and courses can be the perfect solution to this quandary.
In the increasingly small world of international business, English continues to strengthen its position as the dominant language – and where better for youngsters to learn it but where it comes from! Whilst there is always inevitable excitement about the possibility of spending time in the USA, Britain is more accessible for most parents and being on Europe’s doorstep allows a wealth of cultural opportunities. The UK’s independent schools have, therefore, become key providers of high quality Summer Schools and courses.
Broadly speaking there are three different types of offerings available to parents:
- English Language Courses
These are designed to teach and perfect students’ language skills and usually take place at boarding schools where students learn in small groups – and also get to experience various sporting, social and boarding opportunities. However, there is also the possibility of students living with a ‘host’ family (specially chosen and vetted) who give them complete immersion into the English language and British family life; here students are taught on a one-to-one (or two-to-one) basis.
- Academic Preparation Courses
Students from outside the UK who intend to come to school in Britain often need to get used to learning in English and to pick up all-important subject vocabulary. Such courses are offered for students coming to school at 13+, for GCSEs, A-Levels/IB or pre-University.
- ‘English with Activities’
The courses are designed to immerse children in English through a large mix of English, sporting, cultural and social activities – and so many exist that it is possible to find a suitable course to cater for all children’s interests and talents – from Horse Riding to Football; Hockey to Handicrafts.
Finding the right course is, of course, vital: costs and locations vary and parents should give careful thought to the purpose of their child spending time in the UK before making the final selection. However, all of the wonderful Summer Schools and courses are designed to provide a hugely rewarding and enjoyable experience for all students.
BvS Education is able to advise parents on finding the right summer courses and works with an enormous variety of them, to suit all tastes and requirements. However, some of these are now very exclusive and popular and fill up months in advance – so do make contact as soon as possible for Summer 2015.
